2007 Architectural Exhibit Award Winners
CEFPI/WASA School Facility Conference
March 28-30, 2007

Submitted by Stephen Murakami, Hutteball & Oremus Architecture
It was a phenomenal year for the Washington CEFPI Chapter Architectural Exhibit. Drawing in 22 entries, representing the diversity and advancements in educational design throughout the state, this year's exhibit exceeded expectations and was on par with what has been typically associated with a regional conference.

Architects were invited to showcase projects that demonstrate responsiveness to program, reinforcement of surrounding community, positive aesthetics and use of materials, innovative solutions and adaptability to changes in educational delivery for the Polished Apple Award. Architects were also invited to submit conceptual, theory-based, in-design or projects under construction that reinforce the criteria outlined in the guidelines set forth for the Polished Apple to be considered for a Merit Award.

The community's response with such high quality projects created a more challenging task in narrowing the shortlist of qualified projects than what has been witnessed in years past. Representing educational, facilities and non-K-12 architecture, Victoria Bergsagel of Architects of Achievement, James Hansen of the Bethel School District and Keith Schreiber of Schreiber Starling & Lane Architects deliberated for nearly a full day to come to a consensus on this year's Polished Apple and Merit Award-worthy projects.

Their lively discussions resulted in the final selection of the Paschal Sherman Indian School of the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation, designed by ALSC Architects to receive the Polished Apple Award. The jury was impressed by how skillfully the school was designed to meet an array of objectives that drove the form and function of the facility while retaining aesthetic values. The jury made note of how the design reinforced the integration of Native American themes and means to integrate native art throughout the community spaces. They also commented on how the school was an exemplary display of providing a symbolic response to a natural environment through its ability to serve as a community hub and cultural center that connects the 12 tribes.

Merit Awards were presented to Mahlum Architects/Lake Washington School District for their ability to meet an aggressive plan under tight budget constraints with Rosa Parks Elementary School; Madsen Mitchell Evenson & Conrad/ Spokane School District for responding to a difficult site that is set between a busy commercial area and a residential neighborhood with Lidgerwood Elementary School; and Cornerstone Architects/Highline School District for revitalizing a sense of community with White Center Heights Elementary.

As chair of the Architectural Exhibit Committee, I would personally like to thank all those who participated in this year's Exhibit. Chairing this committee for the past three years, it was a thrill to be a part of something of this scale. I'd also like to thank the Architectural Exhibit Committee, returning this year was Shannon McLaughlin of Hargis Engineers and Tony Matiatos of Greene Gasaway Architects and new to the committee, Sherry Eshenbaugh of McGranahan Architects. For without their tireless efforts, the exhibit would not have been as successful and enjoyable as it was.

Washington Chapter School Building Week Video Competition

State School Children Tell Why They Love Their Schools

In April 2005, the Washington Chapter of the Council of Educational Facility Planners International (CEFPI) sponsored the first annual statewide "Why We Love Our School" competition. Held in conjunction with School Building Week (April 18-22), the competition invited participants to produce a 10-minute video that illustrated how their school provides a quality physical environment that supports learning activities and community building.

CEFPI presented cash prizes to the three schools who best documented why they love their school and how their school building supports the learning environment. The winners were:

    • First Place ($2,500): Kapowsin Elementary School, Bethel School District
    • Second Place ($1,200): Odyssey Elementary School, Mukilteo School District
    • Third Place ($600): Phantom Lake Elementary, Bellevue School District
All of the three top videos were from elementary schools; but middle school and high schools also participated in the competition.

The three winners and other participants also highlighted the importance of the planning and design process that shaped their quality schools. There were numerous statements identifying how the planners and architects carefully listened to the students, staff, and community members that were involved in the planning and design process. They discussed how the designers translated those ideas and requests into creative solutions that supported not only the school day activities, but community activities as well.

Bill Chaput, the CEFPI Washington president, Paul Rising, the competition coordinator, and the rest of the Chapter Board were very encouraged by this inaugural event. "It is our hope that this competition will be an annual event that inspires school children, teaching staff, administrators, and parents to understand, appreciate and celebrate the importance of quality learning environments," noted Paul Rising. "Recent studies have indicated that daylighting, indoor air quality and quality acoustics have measurable beneficial effects on students' ability to learn." The Council also emphasizes the idea that the school building should not only be a quality environment, but also a tool for learning. Display surfaces, small group learning areas, technology and flexibility were some of the many elements discussed by the participants.
